Potential patrons of the Starbucks store on Peninsula Boulevard might rethink ordering cow’s milk in their lattes after they spot PETA’s striking new visual plea that features cows marching across a bridge and urges viewers to be on the right side of history by going vegan.

The billboard—designed by The Community ad agency—is part of PETA’s campaign calling on Starbucks to stop charging up to 90 cents extra for the vegan milks it admitsare better for the planet. In the U.S., emissions from cows are the primary source of the greenhouse gas methane, which is 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide in warming the atmosphere.

“Cows feel pain, fear, love, and joy, but the planet-polluting dairy industry rips their calves away from them and sentences them to wretched lives as milk machines,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “Cows can’t fight for their rights, so PETA is calling on everyone to fight for them by going vegan.”

In addition to driving the climate catastrophe, the dairy industry tears calves away from their mothers within a day of birth so that the milk meant to nourish them can be stolen and sold to humans. PETA’s investigations into dairy facilities have found workers electroshocking a cow in the face, hitting cows with poles and a cane, and abusing them in other ways. Once their bodies wear out from repeated pregnancies, they’re sent to slaughter to be used for ground beef or dog food.

PETA’s billboard is located next to Peninsula Shopping Center, near the intersection of Peninsula Boulevard and Harris Avenue.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
