Shoppers in The District might just scratch leather boots off their fall fashion shopping lists after they get an eyeful of the PETA supporter whose “skin” will be torn off—with the help of special-effects makeup—outside Boot Country on Thursday.
“Every leather boot, belt, or bag came from a once living, feeling being whose skin was ripped from their body, possibly while they were still alive,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA encourages everyone to give leather the boot and choose fun, fashionable, and animal-friendly vegan apparel.”
Where: Outside Boot Country, 304 Broadway, Nashville
When: Thursday, September 5, 12 noon
Why: At slaughterhouses, cows killed for leather may be skinned and dismembered while still conscious—after they’ve endured castration (for males), branding, and tail docking, all without painkillers. A PETA exposé of the world’s largest leather processor showed that workers branded calves on the face, beat cows and bulls, and shocked them with electric prods. The leather industry also contributes to land devastation, deforestation, water pollution, and loss of biodiversity. In contrast, sustainable vegan leather made from apples, cork, corn, grapes, mushrooms, and other plants mimics the properties of leather without the cruelty to animals or environmental devastation.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to wear”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness.
