Attendees of the Raising Cane’s grand opening will get more than they bargained for on Thursday, as they’ll be met with an enormous “combo tray” featuring three nearly nude animal protection advocates—including PETA President Tracy Reiman—drenched in “blood” and lying beneath a massive banner reading, “A Combo That Kills.” The provocative display will drive home the message that every “chicken tender” represents a terrified individual who didn’t want to go to the knife.

“Behind every chicken combo meal is cruelty involving a once-living and precious individual who was crammed onto a truck for a terrifying, miserable journey to their slaughter,” says PETA President Tracy Reiman. “PETA asks anyone thinking of eating chicken to consider how these curious, social little birds end up as fried flesh in a fast food bag, and to please go vegan.”

PETA offers a free vegan starter kit for anyone thinking of making the switch.

Where:           Raising Cane’s, 6933 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles (at the intersection of N. Orange Dr. and Hollywood Blvd.)

When:             Thursday, February 26, 9:30 a.m.

Why:               Chickens form strong bonds, dream when they sleep, and worry about the future, just as humans do—but in the meat industry, chickens are confined by the tens of thousands to severely crowded, filthy sheds and bred to grow such unnaturally large upper bodies that their legs often become crippled under the weight. At slaughterhouses, mechanized blades slit their throats—often while they’re still conscious—and many are scalded to death in de-feathering tanks.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow PETA on XFacebook, or Instagram.
