Ben & Jerry’s Nabs PETA Award for Rolling Out ‘Cream of the Crop’ Vegan Ice Cream

Progressive Company Launches Animal-Friendly Nondairy Dessert

After PETA and thousands of consumers, including vegan U.S. Sen. Cory Booker, called on Ben & Jerry’s to offer nondairy ice cream, the Vermont-based company has announced four nondairy almond-milk varieties that will be available in grocery stores nationwide within the next six weeks. And in recognition of this major animal-friendly move, PETA is presenting Ben & Jerry’s with its Proggy Award. “Proggy” stands for “progress,” and the award is given to companies for innovative and animal-friendly achievements.

“Ben and Jerry’s nondairy frozen desserts will take vegan ice cream to a whole new level of deliciousness and make a world of difference for an untold number of cows,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “People will be lining up for the vegan Chunky Monkey like fans waiting for the newest Star Wars film. There’s never been a better time to go vegan.”

Recent years have seen an explosion of vegan dairy options. Starbucks now offers soy- and coconut-milk lattes, TCBY offers a dairy-free frozen yogurt, and major pizza chains like Mellow Mushroom, Pieology, and zpizza now offer melty, stretchy dairy-free cheese for their pies.

Ben & Jerry’s will receive a framed certificate from PETA, whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way.”
