Fans flocking to the 30th-anniversary screening of Babe at the Revue Cinema are in for a special vegan treat on Saturday, courtesy of PETA and Farmer Hoggett himself, James Cromwell. To celebrate the film that inspired the Emmy winner to go vegan, a group of PETA pig pals will give away scrumptious, animal-friendly vegan BLTs from local eatery Animal Liberation Kitchen outside of the theater, while inside, Babe devotees will catch Cromwell in a PETA video spot during the previews where he asks, “How can people love animals and still eat them?”

In the video, the PETA Honorary Director reprises his Farmer Hoggett role, singing “If I Had Words” to a rescued piglet who fell off a truck transporting him to be fattened for slaughter. The piglet—lovingly named Babe—now lives in peace at an animal sanctuary, where he will spend the rest of his days sniffing green grass and enjoying dirt baths with other rescued pigs.

“As the movie Babe so beautifully illustrates, pigs are feeling individuals who love their families and value their lives and don’t want to be carved up for food any more than we do,” says PETA Executive President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is encouraging fans of this iconic film to speak up for all Babes and other animals by leaving them in peace and off their plates.”

PETA points out that pigs are playful, intelligent, friendly animals who are soothed by music, love playing ball, sleep together in “pig piles,” and even enjoy getting massages. Yet in the meat industry, workers chop off piglets’ tails, clip their teeth with pliers, and castrate the males—and the animals endure intense confinement before their throats are slashed in slaughterhouses. Each person who goes vegan spares nearly 200 animals every year and reduces their own disease risk and carbon footprint.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. PETA’s free vegan starter kit includes tips for anyone making the switch. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow PETA on X, Facebook, or Instagram
