This Friday, PETA representatives will be joined by writer Shelia P. Moses and members of the Northampton Memorial Library to commemorate the opening of PETA’s fourth Little Free Library in the county with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Media and members of the public are invited to the celebration on Craig Street in Gaston and encouraged to bring a book to donate; PETA will also be stocking the library with animal-friendly children’s books.

The library is named after and dedicated to George Moses Horton, who was born into slavery in North Carolina and is celebrated as the first Black person in the South to publish a book.

When: Friday, April 18, 11 a.m.

“The George Moses Horton Library stands as a tribute to the enduring themes in his writing of hope and freedom, which PETA is working to achieve for all individuals regardless of species,” says PETA Senior Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch. “PETA is delighted to help inspire young people in the community to become lifelong readers—and animal allies.”

PETA’s Community Animal Project in Northampton County includes more than 20 years of helping families care for dogs by delivering sturdy wooden doghouses, insulating straw bedding, and nutritious food; providing preventive care, such as deworming, flea, and flystrike treatment; and transporting animals to and from spay/neuter surgeries—all free of charge.

The Northampton County Little Free Library Project was designed by Moses to help put books into the hands of every family in the county, with the hope of benefiting generations to come. PETA previously donated the Doris Majette Little Free Library outside Cuz Mini-Mart in Garysburg, the Bishop Little Free Library in Rich Square, and The Margaret Burgwyn Little Free Library in Woodland.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use to abuse in any way”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow PETA on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
