“Cow’s milk tears mothers from their babies.” That’s the message PETA is driving home to incoming crowds of New York State Fair attendees, plastering buses and bus shelters throughout Syracuse and other upstate cities that fairgoers may be traveling from, with a blitz of appeals urging viewers in one of the top dairy-producing states to leave cows in peace by choosing delicious vegan milks made from soy, oats, almonds, or other plants.

“Cows are doting mothers and form instant bonds with their calves, who are cruelly stolen from them within a day of birth just so humans can drink milk and eat cheese,” says PETA President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is encouraging everyone to show compassion by ditching dairy in favor of delicious vegan milks that leave cow families in peace.”
Cows have friends and mourn when a loved one dies or when they’re separated from each other, yet in the dairy industry, female cows are forcibly impregnated and have their beloved calves torn away from them, causing many mother cows to bellow in distress for days. Newborn males are slaughtered for veal, while female calves endure the same fate as their mothers until their bodies wear out and they’re sent to slaughter.
Each person who goes vegan spares nearly 200 animals every year, dramatically shrinks their food-related carbon footprint, and slashes their risk of suffering from cancer, heart disease, strokes, diabetes, and obesity. PETA’s free vegan starter kit is filled with tips to help anyone looking to make the switch.
PETA’s appeals can be seen on 10 buses and 8 shelters in Syracuse, including at 1700 W. Onondaga Street and 2775 Erie Blvd E. as well as on 8 buses in Oswego and 7 buses in Auburn.
