Rock ‘n’ roll legend Joan Jett is cranking up the volume on PETA’s campaign urging Domino’s to add vegan cheese to its U.S. menus in the pizza chain’s own backyard of Ann Arbor, with a new sky-high PETA appeal placed just down the road from a Domino’s store.

“Vegan pizza covered in melty dairy-free cheese is deliciously indulgent and spares cows from being used as milk machines until their bodies give out and they’re sent to slaughter,” says PETA Vice President Danielle Katz. “Domino’s already offers vegan cheese in other countries, and PETA is calling on the pizza chain to deliver for compassionate diners at home by adding a kind slice to its U.S. menu.”

Cows produce milk for the same reason humans do—to nourish their young. But in the dairy industry, calves are torn away from their mothers within a day of birth so humans can steal their milk. Male calves are relegated to cramped veal crates or barren feedlots, while females are sentenced to the same sad fate as their mothers. Cow’s milk is also one of the primary causes of food allergies in children, and millions of Americans—including 95 percent of Asian Americans and 80 percent of Native and African Americans—are lactose intolerant.

PETA’s “Vegan Cheese, Please” campaign has been a runaway hit with kind pizza lovers nationwide, who have joined the call for Domino’s to meet the growing demand for dairy-free pizza that doesn’t tear calves away from their distraught mothers. As part of its campaign, PETA has dished up thousands of free slices of dairy-free pizza to Domino’s patrons nationwide; placed billboards near the chain’s locations; and bought stock in Domino’s in order to have a seat at the table with executives, attend annual meetings, and submit shareholder resolutions.

PETA’s billboard can be seen at 700 W. Cross Street in Ann Arbor, less than a half mile from the Domino’s location on Washtenaw Avenue and a short drive from Domino’s headquarters.
