What:    On Saturday, PETA supporters will hold a protest urging Beijing Tong Ren Tang Canada Co. Ltd. to stop selling ejiao, a traditional Chinese “medicine” made from bludgeoned donkeys’ hides.

When:    Saturday, April 28, 12 noon

Where:    Beijing Tong Ren Tang Canada Co. Ltd., #128-4940 No. 3 Rd., Richmond

A PETA video exposé of the Chinese ejiao industry revealed that thousands of donkeys are kept in filthy, cramped concrete-floored pens and beaten when they reach the market. Their heads are then struck with sledgehammers, and their throats are slit before workers cut off their skins. The footage shows that some of the animals continued to breathe and move even after this horrific treatment.

“No one needs donkey skin, except the animals who were born in it,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA stands with protesters in calling for a ban on this vile product made from the hides of bludgeoned baby donkeys.”

A number of U.S.-based companies—including eBay and Walmart (and its Jet.com)—stopped selling ejiao after hearing from PETA, whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat or abuse in any other way.”
