Baseball fans hungryfor a playoff win will score free vegan hot dogs outside Tropicana Field on Saturday, courtesy of PETA. Stepping up to the plate, PETA’s Tommy Tofu mascot—sporting a pinstriped baseball jersey and Rays cap—will dish out 400 franks alongside animal allies holding signs reading “Hit a Grand Slam for Animals: Go Vegan!” and “Vegan Hot Dogs Are a Home Run.” The ballpark bites will be provided by St. Petersburg’s own Nah Dogs, the popular all-vegan hot dog pop-up that recently opened its first brick-and-mortar location in the Grand Central District.
“Sparing pigs and cows from slaughter while scoring a treat for your taste buds is a winning play,” says PETA Vice President Danielle Katz. “PETA encourages everyone to go to bat for cows and pigs by choosing delicious vegan franks that have all the flavor of a ballpark classic and none of the cruelty.”
Where: Outside Tropicana Field, 1 Tropicana Dr. (near the intersection of 16th Street S. and Fifth Avenue S.)
When: Saturday, Oct. 3, ahead of the Rays playoff game, 5 p.m.
Why: Pigs are soothed by music, and cows mourn when a loved one dies or when they’re separated from each other. Yet in the meat industry, they’re crammed into filthy sheds or kept on crowded feedlots and subjected to tail docking, castration, and other mutilations with no pain relief. Eventually, they’re forced onto transport trucks for a terrifying journey to a slaughterhouse, where workers slit their throats—often while they’re still conscious.
Each person who goes vegan spares nearly 200 animals every year, dramatically shrinks their food-related carbon footprint, and slashes their risk of suffering from cancer, heart disease, strokes, diabetes, and obesity. PETA’s free vegan starter kit can help anyone looking to make the switch.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—points out that when it comes to the ability to feel pain, hunger, and thirst, a cow is a dog is a boy. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow PETA on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
