Meet Georgia: The Sheep Who Thinks She Is a Cow

Issue 4 Autumn 2026

Behind Every Fleece Is Someone With Feelings

When Georgia first arrived at Australia’s Liberation Sanctuary, she was a small soul shattered by trauma. She had been found on a neighbor’s property, lost and frightened. She arrived at the sanctuary with her legs tied together and shaking, a tiny, terrified being. After Georgia settled in, staff gently introduced her to their sheep area, hoping her own kind might comfort her. But Georgia kept her distance, showing no interest in them.

Instead, her eyes were fixed on the next field, the home of the sanctuary’s cow herd.

Acting on a hunch, staff opened the gate. Georgia didn’t hesitate. She didn’t walk – she sprinted straight toward the cows, running right up to them and nestling herself immediately among their massive, comforting bodies. Since that day, they have been inseparable.

Sanctuary staff have tried to introduce her to other sheep, but Georgia wants none of it.

Sanctuary staff have tried to introduce her to other sheep, but Georgia wants none of it. She simply avoids them. To Georgia, the idea of being called a sheep is nothing short of weird. She is a cow, thank you very much, and she’s happy to spend her days grazing and napping among her enormous cow family. If she ever looked into a mirror, she’d be shocked by what she saw!

The sanctuary’s best guess is that Georgia had bolted while being unloaded from a transport truck, escaping her terrifying destination through a tiny, forgotten gap. She would have run until her little legs gave out, finding safety and shelter in a pasture, where a herd of cows raised her. When her adopted family was taken away, she would have been forced to run again, alone, until that moment when the sanctuary’s neighbor asked for help.

Today, Georgia is thriving among her chosen family, feeling truly safe and loved.

When we asked for your yarns about sheep, you answered! Taya Tinsley had always known Freddie as a timid sheep who relied on his sheep friend Rickie for confidence. But when a neighbor’s barking dog jumped a fence, Freddie surprised everyone by stepping in front of Rickie and determinedly stomping his foot. Freddie may have been frightened, but his courage came from protecting his friend.

After a veterinarian arrived to treat Valerie Mitchell’s horses, Pandora started bleating relentlessly. Valerie suspected that Pandora was tattling on the mischief-making goats. Sure enough, a door had been left open, and the goats were inside the feed room, helping themselves. Once they were ushered out and the door was shut, Pandora fell silent!

Jenny Symonds once thought of sheep simply as fluffy figures in distant fields. Her view changed forever during a walk with her children to a nearby farm. Watching the sheep up close, she discovered how different their personalities were – some bold, some shy, some friendly, each an individual. That realization led her to stop eating lambs and, eventually, all animals.

Wool You Help Spread the Word?

PETA entities’ investigations into more than 150 wool operations across seven countries on four continents have revealed that sheep are slammed into hard floors, thrown down chutes, and kicked and cut to shreds when they are flipped upside down and shorn. Please tell everyone you know: Every sheep is someone – not just something that goes into a woolly hat or a shearling coat. They are unique individuals with distinct personalities, preferences, friendships, and fears. They form deep bonds, remember those who treat them kindly, and make choices that reveal just how rich their emotional lives are.
