First Vegan Grilled Cheese Competition Wins Over Los Angeles

Published by .

Grilled cheese sandwiches are the best thing since sliced bread—that’s why the first annual Vegan Grilled Cheese Competition was such a huge success.

Presented by Eat Drink Vegan (formerly, Vegan Beer & Food Festival) and sponsored by Follow Your Heart, the competition took place at Sage Organic Vegan Bistro’s Culver City location, where 10 chefs made a version of the culinary classic and attendees ate the sammies and judged them via ballots. There were even celebrity judges to offer their opinions, such as former NFL defensive lineman David Carter, aka “The 300 Pound Vegan.”

The culinary geniuses included chefs from Café Gratitude, Spork Foods, and Sage as well as nonvegan grilled cheese experts like The Grilled Cheese Truck and Blind Barber.

Another awesome bonus? All the proceeds from the ticket sales benefited PETA.

Chef Ayinde Howell, author of The Lusty Vegan, won the People’s Choice Award for his Mac and Cheese Grilled Cheese Sandwich, and Vinny Blanco, aka “Gangster Vegan,” won Judges’ Favorite with his Philly Sweet Potato Cheesesteak Grilled Cheese.

If you missed it this year, don’t sweat it—you can make one (or all) of these 20 delicious vegan grilled cheese sandwiches to satisfy your hunger until next year.
