McDonald’s Is Testing Out a Vegan Burger Patty in Canada—But Where’s the U.S. Launch?

Published by Elena Waldman.

McDonald’s is giving vegan burger patties another shot—this time in Canada. The fast-food giant is testing a new McVeggie sandwich at select locations until April 14, giving Canadian customers a taste of the future. But here’s the Mc-big question: Why is the U.S. left out? If McDonald’s can offer a vegan patty up north, there’s no excuse for not doing the same in the States. What’s the holdup, eh?

What’s On the Menu? A Look at McDonald’s New McVeggie Options

While the McVeggie has long been popular in countries like India, Brazil, and Australia, the new Canadian version has its own unique flavor. The burger has a breaded patty featuring a blend of carrots, green beans, zucchini, peas, soybeans, broccoli, and corn on a sesame-seed bun.

How to Order the Canadian McVeggie Vegan

The McVeggie can be ordered vegan with a simple tweak. Ask for it without the mayo-based sauce or habanero spread—both of which contain eggs. Instead, opt for ketchup or mustard. The McVeggie can be found at locations in the following cities:

  • Langley, British Columbia
  • Richmond, British Columbia
  • Surrey, British Columbia
  • Brampton, Ontario
  • Windsor, Ontario
  • Dieppe, New Brunswick
  • Moncton, New Brunswick
  • Riverview, New Brunswick
  • Sussex, New Brunswick

Why Doesn’t McDonald’s Have a Vegan Burger in the U.S.?

McDonald’s first attempt at offering a veggie burger in the U.S. was in 2021 when the chain trialed the McPlant—made in collaboration with Beyond Meat—at locations in California and Texas. The sandwich was later discontinued—a decision that experts have criticized as a marketing failure rather than a lack of consumer demand. Roughly six percent of Americans don’t eat meat—about the same percentage of the population as the UK, where the McPlant was so popular that McDonald’s introduced a Double McPlant months later. Hundreds and thousands of consumers have called on McDonald’s to add vegan options to its U.S. menu. The company must stop dragging its feet and start catering to customers who care about animals, the environment, and their health.

Why Everyone Should Demand Vegan Options at McDonald’s and Other Fast Food Chains

Cows, chickens, pigs, and other animals exploited and killed for “food” are sensitive, feeling individuals who do not want to suffer. Cows grieve for their lost loved ones, and mother hens teach calls to their chicks before they even hatch. Pigs are playful and empathetic and are known to be excellent problem-solvers. In the meat, egg, and dairy industries, these animals often spend their lives in cramped, filthy sheds where they cannot bask in the sun, dig in the dirt, or even breathe fresh air. At slaughterhouses, many animals remain conscious when their throats are slit or when they are dragged into the scalding-hot water of defeathering or hair-removal tanks.

YOU can take action against this cruelty by going vegan. By doing so, you can save nearly 200 animals every year, reduce your environmental footprint, and protect yourself from cancer, heart disease, and other illnesses. Make the compassionate switch today!
