Last-Minute Cat Makeup Tutorial Using All Cruelty-Free Products

Did you know that declawing a cat is the equivalent of cutting a person’s fingers off at the first knuckle? There’s no better way to raise awareness of this horrifying practice than to dress up as a declawed cat for your next costume party. We teamed up with makeup and visual effects artist Jason Henricks to get the ultimate cruelty-free cat makeup tutorial for people who want to make a statement with their Halloween costume.

Follow these steps to achieve the look:

Start with a clean, dry face.

Eyes

• Using white and black eyeliner pencils, outline the eyes. White on the waterline and below will help make your eyes look bigger. Don’t worry about perfect lines just yet—they can be touched up at the end.
• Using dark black or brown, add a little shadow to define the cat eye shape more.
• Use the same darker color to make the brows a tiny bit heavier and more “animal-like.”
• Apply a bit of mascara to the top lashes, then glue your cruelty-free false lashes into place. Add another layer of mascara to blend the false lashes with your own.
• Add a touch of pink eye shadow to the upper lid.
• Using liquid liner, define the edges of your eyes to emphasize the cat look.
• Apply small strokes of liquid liner to the brows to get a bushy look.

Face

• Apply foundation and concealer as usual.
• Use a white eyeliner pencil to draw the outline of a cat’s nose and muzzle. Use the contouring powder to sculpt your cheeks and define your nose, muzzle, and chin. Then blend with a cosmetics sponge.
• Use your highlighter to push out your cheekbones and define your nose, muzzle, and chin.
• Apply a bit of pink blush to the apples of your cheeks.
• Use black liquid liner to outline and fill in your upper lip, then outline your lower lip and color in slightly.
• Apply pink lipstick and blend for an ombré look. Blot lips and apply more color as necessary.
• Use the white eyeliner pencil to draw in two tears, filling in with white and topping with a blue eye shadow. We also added some glittery eyeliner for extra glamour.
• Don’t forget the whiskers! Add three dots to each side of your muzzle with your black eyeliner pencil.

Paws

• You may want to ask a friend for help with this part. Using gauze or bandages, wrap your fingers and hands. Be sure to wrap them comfortably so that you can still use your hands while you’re partying.
• Brush some cruelty-free red nail polish on your knuckles to create a bloody look.
• Add a tail and a “cat ears” headband, and the look will be complete! You’ll be a walking public service announcement about the dangers of declawing a cat.
