  7. 15 Fashion Trends to Rock in 2018

15 Fashion Trends to Rock in 2018

Published January 7, 2018 by PETA Staff. Last Updated July 17, 2019.

New Year’s is a great opportunity to upgrade yourself and your life for the better. It’s all in your approach. Want your positive actions to ripple out to animals and the environment while looking fantastic? We thought so! Check out our predictions for 2018’s vegan fashion trends below.

1. White Boots

Brands like Bhava Studio are brightening closets with white boots—a modern take on the ’60s mod wardrobe staple. We can’t wait to slip our feet into some white vegan leather boots in 2018.

2. Lavender

Mark our words: Lavender will be the new “it” color for clothing and makeup—and it’ll be perfect when spring hits.

3. Satin Dresses

We love a slinky, silky, satin-y vegan dress—especially since silk has recently been shown to be one of the most environmentally damaging material used in fashion (second only to leather). Thank goodness there are plenty of sustainable silk substitutes—such as organic cotton, hemp, bamboo, linen, acrylic, polyester, spandex, and rayon—that are significantly less damaging.

4. Corduroy

Don’t get it twisted: Corduroy may be from the ’70s, but it still looks good today. You’ll be spotting this casual, comfy material in jackets, pants, and other items this year.

5. Double-Breasted Outerwear

A double-breasted coat has two rows of buttons instead of one, making it that much more classy. In the #NewYearNewVegan, it’s all about wool-free pieces. Obtaining wool is a cruel, archaic process, and sheep are sent to slaughter once their wool production declines. Don’t want to support this inhumane industry? Take a look at this gorgeous cruelty-free camel coat:

6. Fanny Packs

Fanny pack, belt bag—whatever you call it, the ’90s are back, so get on board!

7. Teddy Coats

These cuddly, cruelty-free, fuzzy coats are making a splash on the fashion scene.

8. Graphic Tees and Sweatshirts

Make a statement in 2018 without saying a word in a bold graphic shirt or sweatshirt.

9. Tulle

Boy, do we love this one—tulle is gorgeous, but it can be tricky to incorporate into everyday life. Good thing that brands are getting creative with this famous tutu material.

10. Raincoats and Windbreakers

PVC, vegan patent leather, and vinyl are great materials for slick jackets that are reminiscent of the ’90s. (Think The Matrix meets Mary Tyler Moore.)

11. Utilitarian Clothing

If you can believe it, clothing can look gorgeous and be practical. Look for utilitarian pockets on jackets and jumpsuits to give your look a tougher edge.

12. Dark Denim

Light denim had its day, and now, it’s time for its moody sister. Grab a pair of dark-blue, high-waisted sailor jeans, for example:

13. Plaid

Don’t be mad at plaid—there are many creative ways to incorporate it into your wardrobe. We love a plaid blazer or dress.

14. Velvet

Let’s face it: Velvet has never gone out of style. It is, however, becoming more of a wardrobe staple than ever before. Get yourself a velvet jumpsuit, shoes, or even flared pants in 2018.

15. Fruit Leather

“Fruit,” you say? Yes! New technologies are being developed to create tough, sustainable cruelty-free leather. Pineapple, apple, and other fruit waste are all part of this growing industry. Read more here about the ingenious ways in which people are developing vegan leather.

“Almost all of us grew up eating meat, wearing leather, and going to circuses and zoos. We never considered the impact of these actions on the animals involved. For whatever reason, you are now asking the question: Why should animals have rights?”

— Ingrid Newkirk, PETA Founder and co-author of Animalkind
