9 Cruelty-Free Fall Makeup Trends at $13 or Less

Published October 7, 2016 by PETA Staff. Last Updated January 30, 2018.

Fall 2016 is full of dramatic makeup trends—whether you like smudgy black eyeliner and dark lips or glitter and peach eye shadow, it’s time to try something new.

In order to try these trends, you’re going to need some new cruelty-free products, so here are our recommendations to help you achieve the new looks without damaging your bank account.

Please note: All these products are cruelty-free and vegan. “Cruelty-free” means that the product was developed without any animal tests, while “vegan” means that in addition to not being tested on animals, the product does not include any animal-derived ingredients.

1. Berry Red Stained Lips

This stain features rosewater and vitamin E. Blot lips after applying. We recommend e.l.f. Aqua Beauty Radiant Gel Lip Stain in Rouge Radiance.

2. Glitter Bomb

The fun part about glitter is that it can look good as eye shadow or cheekbone highlight, on lips, or even streaked along the bottom of your eyebrows. We love the Color Icon Glitter Single in Spiked by wet n wild.

3. Baby Doll Eyelashes

Baby doll eyelashes from the 1960s “mod” era are back. Recreate the look with the e.l.f. Natural Lash Kit.

4. Dramatic Eyeliner

Line your upper and lower lids with a finely pointed pencil, and lightly smudge the liner with your fingertip. The key is also to line your waterlines, i.e., the upper and lower inner rims of your eyes. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics’ Colour Pencil in Tarred does the trick well.

5. Peach Eye Shadow

Peach eye shadow will brighten your eyes and make you look a shade innocent. Try the look with wet n wild’s Au Natural Palette in Bare Necessities.

6. Gothic Lips

Dark lip color is a dramatic and daring evening look. Green, purple, and even black have been seen on the fall runways. We recommend Lip Tar in Pagan by Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics.

7. Fluorescent Pop

Popular fluorescent looks include colored mascara, under eyeliner, lip color, and eye shadow. Experiment with the look using e.l.f. Gotta Glow Lip Tint in Perfect Pink.

8. Dark Red Nail Color

Something about the crisp fall weather makes us want to get a little gothic with our cosmetics (as evidenced by number six). This goes for nail colors, too—try Pacifica’s Red Red Wine shade. This company is 100 percent vegan, so pick up some other shades while you’re at it!

9. Blue Eye Shadow

The current trend isn’t just a swipe of shadow but a full eyelid in bright blue. Picture girls from the 1950s on their way to the prom. We recommend wet n wild’s Color Icon Eye Shadow Single in Suede.

“Almost all of us grew up eating meat, wearing leather, and going to circuses and zoos. We never considered the impact of these actions on the animals involved. For whatever reason, you are now asking the question: Why should animals have rights?”

— Ingrid Newkirk, PETA Founder and co-author of Animalkind
