Craig Conant Dishes Out Crucial Kitty Care Tips in New PSA

Cats off to Craig Conant! The internet sensation, comedian, and fervent feline fan has a house full of purr-sonality—four cats, to be exact—and he’s teaming up with PETA to dish out some essential kitty-care wisdom just in time for International Cat Day (August 8)!

In PETA’s cheeky video, Conant and his beloved adopted companions sit down for a chat—and even record a “Cat Cast”—to discuss the things all cat guardians should know: the importance of adoption, spaying and neutering, never declawing cats, and keeping the litter box clean. When it comes to caring for companion cats, this comedian isn’t kitten around.

How to Be a Paw-Some Cat Guardian

Conant shares some vital reminders for cat guardians in PETA’s PSA, including the following:

Don’t declaw: Declawing isn’t a manicure—it’s a painful amputation that removes part of your cat’s toes, leading to lifelong pain, behavioral issues, and even litter-box avoidance. Provide scratching posts, trim nails regularly, and use positive reinforcement to guide your cat’s scratching.

“People think that declawing cats is OK ….You’re ripping their fingers off, you psychopath,” Conant says.

Always spay or neuter: Sterilizing your cat prevents countless unwanted kittens from being born only to end up struggling to survive on the streets. Homeless animals can suffer and die from starvation, attacks from other animals or cruel humans, exposure, and other deadly dangers. Altered animals live longer, healthier lives and are less likely to contract deadly, contagious diseases, such as feline AIDS and feline leukemia, that are spread through bodily fluids.

Adopt, don’t shop: Adoption means providing a loving home for an animal in need. Meanwhile, buying from cruel breeders or pet stores fuels the cycle of overpopulation and homelessness. If you are ready to offer a lifetime of care for a companion animal, always adopt.

Scoop that litter box: Would you use a filthy bathroom? A clean litter box isn’t just about odor control—cats are fastidious and may refuse to use a dirty box, leading to stress and accidents around the house. Scoop out the litter box at least twice a day, preferably every time your cat uses the box—and especially after meal times.

Conant knows just how rewarding it is to care for cats the right way. Reflecting on life with his feline friends, he says, “I wake up every day surrounded by love and happiness.”
