Urge The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf to Drop the Vegan Surcharge!

Imagine wanting to do the right thing—refusing to support a cruel industry in which cows are raped and impregnated and their babies are taken away—but a multimillion-dollar company forces you to pay more to make that choice.

That’s exactly what The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf does when it charges customers more for nondairy milk. These unfair surcharges penalize lactose-intolerant customers and those who choose vegan milk to help the planet.

Starbucks, Dunkin, and other coffee shops are doing the compassionate thing by offering vegan milk at no additional cost. The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf should reward customers, not penalize them, for opting out of dairy.

It’s time for The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf to brew something new. Give it a wake-up call by taking the following actions:

Contact The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf on social media and ask it to stop charging extra for vegan milk. Be sure to include their hashtag, #thecoffeebean!

Email the company directly with one click of a button.

Send a handwritten letter to The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf’s headquarters, urging them to immediately end the unfair vegan milk surcharge:

International Coffee & Tea, LLC
550 S. Hope Street, Suite 2100
Los Angeles, CA 90071-5700

  • For the animals: Cows in the dairy industry are forcibly inseminated, and their calves are taken away within 24 hours of birth. Mother cows sometimes wail for their babies for days. Male calves are killed for veal, and females go through the same cycle of forced impregnation and loss of their calves that their mothers endured. After four or five years of this abuse, they’re sent to a slaughterhouse, where they suffer a violent, painful death.
  • For the planet: The production of cow’s milk generates about three times more greenhouse gas emissions and uses nine times more land than vegan milks. It takes 628 liters of water to produce 1 liter of cow’s milk, while oat or soy milk requires 90% less water. The planet doesn’t have time for half measures when there are so many sustainable vegan milks to use.
  • For human health: Cow’s milk has been linked to many chronic conditions, including allergies, asthma, and acne, as well as major health epidemics that affect millions of Americans, including heart disease, obesity, cancer, and diabetes.
  • For equality: Dietary racism impacts millions of Americans who are lactose intolerant, including 75% of African Americans and American Indians, and 90% of Asian Americans.
  • For business: Countless other chains offer dairy-free milk at no extra charge, including Starbucks, Stumptown Coffee Roasters, Noah’s New York Bagels, Philz Coffee, and Whole Foods. The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf needs to do right by cows, the planet, and customers by ending the vegan surcharge.
