Tell Steiff, Creator of the First Teddy Bear, to Ban Mohair

Steiff introduced the world to the teddy bear. Today, it has the opportunity—and responsibility—to ensure these toys no longer come at the expense of goats’ suffering.

Steiff sells teddy bears made from mohair, which comes from Angora goats. PETA Asia investigations in South Africa—where most mohair is produced—revealed workers dragging goats by their horns and legs, cutting their throats, and leaving them to die. Others were injured during shearing and left bleeding without care. Even “responsible” mohair farms have been linked to this abuse.

Goats are lively, expressive animals who show happiness by leaping, playing, and wagging their tails. Mothers form deep bonds with their kids, and the two learn to recognize each other’s unique voices within hours of birth. But in the mohair industry, goat kids start being exploited for their hair when they’re only about 6 months old. Once their fleece is considered “low quality” or they’re no longer considered profitable, they are slaughtered—often long before they would naturally reach old age.

No toy is worth this violence. Urge Steiff to ban mohair!
