Urge Santa Monica to Ditch Faulty Bird-Deterrent Netting

PETA recently received a report that bird-deterrent netting has fallen into disrepair under the Santa Monica pier. Reportedly, birds have become trapped behind the netting and died on multiple occasions. While the desire for nonlethal bird control is admirable, reports of improperly installed or broken netting are far too common, so these devices frequently do more harm than good. We’re told pier management was first alerted to this issue a year ago and that they’ve claimed to be working on a solution ever since. PETA received a similar response from officials, yet conditions remain unchanged.

Photographs reportedly taken at the pier recently.

These birds need your voice! Please politely contact city officials, urging them to remove the faulty netting, and then share this alert far and wide:

1. Email Mr. Jim Nunez, Beach Supervisor for the City of Santa Monica, at [email protected].

2. Call the city’s Beach Maintenance Office at (310) 458-8974.
