The school year is ending and the summer travel season is kicking off, so PETA has erected a giant billboard along the freeway heading to SeaWorld San Diego alerting families to a major reason to avoid the place at all costs: the sexual abuse of the dolphins and whales imprisoned there.

“No family should go to a theme park that forcibly breeds marine mammals and imprisons them in cramped, barren tanks, as SeaWorld does,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “Kids love animals, and anyone seeking to foster kindness should leave marine abusement parks out of their plans this summer.”

At SeaWorld, 140 dolphins are packed together into just seven small tanks, where they can’t escape attacks from other frustrated, aggressive dolphins. By contrast, in nature, bottlenose dolphins maintain dynamic relationships with large social networks, choose their own mates, and swim free in the ocean. Unwilling captive female dolphins are taken out of the water and sometimes drugged so that they can’t fight back while staff shove tubes filled with semen into their uteruses. Some animals have been repeatedly impregnated, only to lose their babies.

The billboard is located on I-5, south of Slauson Avenue, in Commerce.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit SeaWorldOfHurt.com or follow PETA on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
