“Meat and Dairy Farms Drain Half the Country’s Water.” That’s the message on new PETA billboards featuring Pamela Anderson in a shower that debuted on April 5 in advance of Earth Day outside many Sioux Falls fast-food restaurants..

“The meat and dairy industries are guzzling up our water supply and sending our planet down the drain,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA wants everyone to follow Pamela Anderson’s example and make a splash for animals and the environment by giving vegan meals a try.”

Growing water-intensive crops simply to feed animals raised for their flesh or milk consumes more than half the water used in the country. Runoff from animal agriculture is also one of the leading causes of river and lake pollution: In 2018, the Smithfield Foods plant downtown—which releases about 2.5 million gallons of wastewater into the Big Sioux River daily—admitted to dumping illegal levels of ammonia into the river.

PETA notes that people who go vegan spare animals immense suffering; reduce their risk of suffering from heart attacks, cancer, and diabetes; and help prevent future epidemics and pandemics. SARS, swine flu, bird flu, and COVID-19 all stemmed from confining and killing animals for food.

PETA offers delicious meatless and dairy-free recipes on its website and a vegan starter kit filled with tips.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
