PETA India has sent baskets of vegan goodies—including biryani from GoodDot, oat milk from Good Mylk, sweets, and more—to every family in Thulasendrapuram, the Indian village where Vice President–Elect Kamala Harris’ grandfather was born. The village council and his volunteers delivered the baskets on PETA India’s behalf in celebration of Harris’ landmark inauguration as the first woman and first person of Indian descent to be elected vice president of the U.S.

Photos of the vegan baskets are available here.

“PETA joins kind people in celebrating the milestone of a part-Indian U.S. vice president,” says PETA India founder Ingrid Newkirk. “Vice President–Elect Harris has supported laws against cruelty to animals, and we’re looking forward to new and stronger protections for animals everywhere in the world.”

Each person who goes vegan saves nearly 200 animals every year; reduces their risk of suffering from heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and cancer; dramatically shrinks their carbon footprint; and helps prevent future pandemics. SARS, swine flu, bird flu, and COVID-19 all stemmed or spread from confining or killing animals for food. And according to the United Nations, a global shift toward a vegan lifestyle is vital in order to save the world from hunger.

Among other efforts, Harris has supported congressional bills aimed at addressing cruelty to animals, including some relating to the shark fin trade, wildlife trafficking, and Thoroughbred doping in horse racing.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—opposes speciesism, which is a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on TwitterFacebook, or Instagram.
