Bird Expert Joins Effort to End Owl Torture at Johns Hopkins U.

A bird expert has joined PETA in demanding that Johns Hopkins University (JHU) stop cutting into owls’ skulls in a basement torture chamber for cruel and worthless experiments funded by taxpayers.

This owl is one of many imprisoned in Shreesh Mysore’s basement laboratory, where he cuts into their skulls and screws metal devices onto their heads in curiosity-driven experiments that have no relevance for human health.

Stephen Jones—a wildlife consultant and raptor specialist at the Boulder County Audubon Society with more than 30 years of experience studying owls—recently wrote to JHU President Ronald J. Daniels, asking for an end to the deadly owl experiments conducted by Shreesh Mysore.

“I was appalled to hear about research within your Health Center Laboratory,” Jones wrote.

Owls imprisoned in Mysore’s laboratory are locked inside cages, and electrodes are implanted into their brains. They’re restrained in plastic tubes or jackets and exposed to frightening bursts of light, their brain tissue is mutilated, and they’re eventually killed. This is supposed to tell us something about human attention deficit disorder.

“These practices sound more like something from the Inquisition than from the research laboratory of an esteemed university,” Jones wrote. “It’s way past time we eliminated medical research that treats animals cruelly.”

With the letter, sent in July, Jones joins thousands of compassionate people calling for an end to the extreme torment of owls at Johns Hopkins.
