In response to the Palm Coast Aquatics Center’s first-ever “mermaid” lessons for children, PETA plans to place a billboard nearby featuring Nickelodeon’s Daniella Monet as an underwater mermaid above the words “Try to Relate to Who’s on Your Plate. Fish Are Friends, Not Food.”

“Children love animals, and if they knew that fish value their own lives, they wouldn’t wish to catch or eat them,” says PETA Executive President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA hopes to spark family dialogs about going vegan by showing kids that fish are individuals who feel pain and fear, just as we do.”

More fish are killed for food each year than all other animals combined, yet they have no legal protection from abuse. Half of all fish consumed worldwide each year spend their lives in cramped, filthy enclosures on commercial fish farms and commonly suffer from parasite infections and diseases and sustain debilitating injuries. Wild-caught fish slowly suffocate or are crushed to death when they’re dragged from the oceans in huge nets, and the throats and stomachs of those who survive are cut open on the decks of fishing boats. Each person who goes vegan spares nearly 200 animals every year daily suffering and a terrifying death.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—opposes speciesism, which is a human-supremacist worldview. The group offers a free vegan starter kit full of recipes, tips, and more. For more information, please visit PETA.org.
