Photos: Ducklings (Dumped After Easter) Rescued

PETA Manager John Di Leonardo, along with members of Long Island Orchestrating for Nature (LION), spent Mother’s Day in search of two little ducklings who were missing their mother. Likely bought as Easter-basket props and discarded after the holiday, the ducklings were found after a five-hour search through the 432-acre Massapequa Preserve. The birds are now recovering at Di Leonardo’s home, and they’ll soon be available for adoption.

PETA points out that it’s a crime to abandon a domestic duck, as these animals often can’t fly and have no more ability to survive on their own than the average puppy or kitten. But over the last year, LION has rescued half a dozen ducks who were abandoned at the preserve, likely after Easter or after being used in hatching projects at local schools.

“These domestic animals are literally sitting ducks for predators and cruel humans,” says Di Leonardo. “PETA and LION want everyone to know that ducklings are sensitive living beings who need lifelong care, not disposable classroom projects or Easter photo props.”
