Please see the following statement from PETA in response to news that scientists have restored some function in the brains of dead pigs:

Taxpayer funds should not be subsidizing the morbid curiosities of animal experimenters. It’s outrageous that this experiment—reminiscent of something from Frankenstein’s laboratory—was funded with federal tax dollars and not subject to the normal oversight process by Yale University’s Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee. PETA will request investigations by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, as this intentional avoidance of oversight may violate the federal Animal Welfare Act and NIH grant guidelines. Reviving brain activity in pigs who were killed for their flesh raises serious ethical concerns, and many bioethicists are appropriately alarmed by this hideous experiment.
