A Proggy Award (“Proggy” is for “progress”) is on its way from PETA to Hasbro in honor of its new Monopoly for Millennials game, which has sparked controversy by replacing owning real estate with collecting “experiences”—but its animal-friendly options, such as eating at a vegan bistro and visiting an animal shelter, have won PETA’s praise. Reward cards also received a compassionate update, such as the one reading, “Your side hustle of selling vegan candles has paid off!”

“Monopoly for Millennials may have garnered some criticism for its cheeky portrayal of millennial culture, but it nails our generation’s dedication to helping animals,” says PETA Senior Director of Youth Outreach and Campaigns (and millennial) Marta Holmberg. “PETA is recognizing Hasbro for acknowledging a simple fact: Young adults today are choosing kindness over cruelty.”

According to a recent study, 70 percent of the world population is reducing or eliminating its meat consumption—a shift driven by millennials (26 percent of whom already identify as either vegetarian or vegan), who consider the impact that their choices have on animal welfare and the environment. Each person who goes vegan saves the lives of nearly 200 animals every year—and the United Nations reports that a global switch to vegan eating is vital if we are to combat the worst effects of climate change.

PETA’s motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat.” For more information, please visit PETA.org.
