What:    With signs proclaiming, “SeaWorld: Don’t Tear Babies Away From Their Mothers” and “Melanie Has Already Lost 2 Babies,” PETA supporters will descend on the abusement park on Sunday to urge the management to allow a 29-year-old bottlenose dolphin named Melanie to stay with her newborn baby.

When:    Sunday, November 11, 10:45 a.m.–12:30 p.m.

Where:    500 Sea World Dr. (at the intersection with Sea World Way), San Diego

“SeaWorld forcibly breeds dolphins like Melanie, some while they’re drugged, only to confine their offspring to tiny tanks in faraway places and deny them any semblance of a natural life,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “The least that SeaWorld can do is let this suffering mother stay with her baby and stop breeding her and others.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment”—notes that in nature, dolphin mothers spend years, if not their entire lives, with their offspring. However, SeaWorld took Melanie’s two other calves from her and sent them to other parks across the country in order to turn a buck.
