What:    A group of “breastfeeding” PETA supporters will descend on the White House on the final day of World Breastfeeding Week to protest the U.S. government’s recent attempt to derail breastfeeding in developing countries because of its own business interests with cow’s milk–based infant-formula companies. PETA is also encouraging nursing mothers to join in by sending photos of themselves breastfeeding their babies to the White House.

When:    Tuesday, August 7, 12 noon

Where:    Outside the White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. N.W., Washington

“For any human mother who is able to breastfeed, her breast is best for her baby just as a mother cow’s udder is best for her calf,” says PETA Executive Vice President and mother Tracy Reiman. “PETA’s eye-popping demonstration will encourage everyone to kick cow’s milk to the curb and recognize that corporate advertising isn’t the best guide to what’s best for babies.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—notes that humans are the only animals who drink the milk of another species and who drink milk beyond infancy. In the dairy industry, cows are repeatedly and forcibly inseminated on what the industry itself has called a “rape rack.” Their babies are taken away from them shortly after birth so that humans can drink the milk that was meant for the calves, and mother cows have been heard calling for their infants for days after separation.
