What:    On Wednesday, PETA’s giant dancing vegetable mascots “Chris P. Carrot” and “Colonel Corn” will descend on Chicago—a city with a long meatpacking history located in one of the top pork-producing states in the country—to pass out free vegan ham sandwiches to passersby. The giveaway will take place near the site of a new PETA billboard—one of four that recently went up across Chicago—showing a delightful pig’s face next to the words “I’m ME, Not MEAT. See the Individual. Go Vegan.”

When:    Wednesday, August 1, 12 noon

Where:    51 W. Division St. (near the intersection of N. Dearborn and W. Division streets), Chicago

“The ad is a useful reminder that, just like humans, pigs are made of flesh and blood, feel pain and fear, have unique personalities, and value their own lives,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “We hope PETA’s vibrant veggie mascots will inspire Chicagoans to lose their taste for animals and go for vegan fare, including Fakin’ Bacon, Gardein’s Porkless Bites, and the many other hearty and tasty vegan foods that are available.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”— notes that in the meat industry, pigs’ tails are chopped off, their teeth are cut with pliers, and males are castrated, all without pain relief. At the slaughterhouse, they’re hung upside down and bled to death.
