What:    At the Santa Barbara County Fair on Friday, members of PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—will gather outside the fairgrounds and urge 4-H participants, their parents, and fairgoers to show mercy to the animals who are slated to be auctioned off for slaughter.

When:    Friday, July 13, 12 noon

Where:    937 S. Thornburg St., Santa Maria

Songwriter and PETA supporter Diane Warren met one of the 4-H students weeks ago, and after he begged her to save his sheep, Cotton, Warren offered to pay well above market value for Cotton and other animals in the program so that they could be sent to sanctuaries—but the students’ parents all backed out of the deal when they were reportedly told by the 4-H program that the kids would lose their membership for next year if the animals weren’t slaughtered. A program supervisor for the county later confirmed that this was false information.

“4-H programs teach kids to harden their hearts and force them to betray their friends for money,” says PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange. “PETA hopes to spark some compassion for these animals, because it’s not too late for them to be spared slaughter and sent to sanctuaries.”
