Showering on the Sidewalk? It’s a World Water Day Protest
As Drought Grips the Southwest, PETA Will Expose Meat and Dairy Industries as Nation’s Biggest Water Wasters

What: Making a bold statement with her nearly nude body covered only by a banner that reads, “Save Water: Go Vegan! 1 lb. of Beef Equals 180 Showers. 2 Slices of Cheese Equal 55 Gals. of H20,” a PETA supporter will shower on a Phoenix sidewalk on Thursday, in honor of World Water Day.
When: Thursday, March 22, 12 noon
Where: The intersection of Washington Street and Central Avenue, Phoenix
“This World Water Day, PETA will alert the drought-stricken Southwest that the meat and dairy industries are guzzling up our water supply and spewing out contaminants,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “Going vegan is the best way to reduce animal suffering, go green, and conserve water.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—notes that growing water-intensive crops simply to feed animals raised for food consumes more than half the water in the U.S. Runoff from animal agriculture is also one of the leading causes of river and lake pollution—and it can contaminate groundwater with viruses and bacteria.
