Urge the City of Isle of Palms, South Carolina, to Stop Killing Coyotes!
Reportedly, the city of Isle of Palms in South Carolina has hired a contractor to set steel-jaw traps for coyotes there, and ensnared victims are trucked outside city limits and killed. However, lethal initiatives like this are 100 percent ineffective, as survivors breed in order to replace lost pack members and more coyotes move in from outlying areas for the available resources. Also, animals caught in these archaic devices (including the padded or rubber-coated variety) can sustain horrific injuries in their frantic attempts to escape, even chewing or twisting off their own limbs. Killing these wild animals tears their families apart, too, leaving their orphaned young to starve. And steel-jaw traps are indiscriminate, posing risks to companion animals and “nontarget” wildlife—including protected species. PETA has informed Isle of Palms officials of the cruelty and futility of this plan and advised them regarding humane coyote-control methods, but we’ve received no assurances that the traps will be removed.
