PETA Denounces Another Birth at SeaWorld, Which Condemns New Orca Baby to Decades in Captivity

What:    With Takara the orca set to give birth any day now, “pregnant” PETA supporters will gather in San Antonio to demand that SeaWorld release her and her soon-to-be-born calf into a protected sea sanctuary—along with all 22 other orcas currently suffering in the company’s concrete prisons.

When:    Tuesday, February 7, 12 noon

Where:    Intersection of E. Commerce and Losoya streets, San Antonio

“The last orca born into captivity at SeaWorld must not be allowed to endure a nonlife in a tiny tank,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA mothers and fathers are calling for these orcas to be retired to a seaside sanctuary, where a mother could teach her baby how to dive deep and live free.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment”—notes that in the wild, orcas often live alongside their sisters, mothers, and grandmothers for life. Takara has previously given birth to four calves, two of whom were taken away from her at a young age, and she has never met her grandchildren at the notorious Loro Parque in Spain. Her family members are currently dispersed among SeaWorld’s three parks in the U.S. as well as in Spain.
