PETA Statement: San Antonio Zoo’s Dirty Deal Doesn’t Do Enough

Below, please find a statement from PETA Foundation Associate Director of Captive Animal Law Enforcement Rachel Mathews in response to the San Antonio Zoo’s announcement that it has obtained an elephant named Nicole from the Ringling Bros. circus:

This dirty circus deal is a half measure meant to silence the public outcry against the San Antonio Zoo, where one lonely elephant, Lucky, has swayed back and forth in psychological distress for years. There’s no justice in locking her up in a small, virtually barren enclosure alongside another elephant whose years in the circus have left her with painful joint and foot problems. PETA is calling on the zoo to do right by both these elephants by releasing them to an accredited sanctuary.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment”—has repeatedly called for elephants to be released from both the San Antonio Zoo and Ringling Bros. circus. Please let me know if you have any questions or if there’s any further information that I can provide.
