PETA Foundation Captive Animal Law Enforcement Counsel Rachel Mathews released the following statement in response to reports that a zebra died after escaping from the notorious Bailiwick Animal Park:

This zebra’s sad death is yet another example of why wild animals should never be held captive, and her escape is no surprise given Bailiwick Animal Park’s long history of violating federal animal-welfare laws, including by maintaining unsafe animal enclosures. PETA has called on the U.S. Department of Agriculture to investigate this incident, and we encourage families to stay away from any roadside zoo where animals are displayed, used, and abused.

This is only the most recent in a series of recent and sometimes deadly zebra escapes worldwide.

PETA’s motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment.”
