Vegan Food in Space: It’s Almost a Thing
In case you don’t know, there is such a thing as a vegan butcher, and they’re awesome. The Herbivorous Butcher, which, as we previously reported, opened in Minneapolis this year, sells high-quality plant-based sausages, steaks, ribs, and more. As if pioneering plant-based meats weren’t enough work, something else was recently added to its proverbial plate. The shop is currently developing vegan food for outer space! No, seriously.
The brother and sister behind the vegan butcher shop were recently contacted by a scientist at the Advanced Space and Technology Research Laboratory, who asked them to create a vegan meal plan for six astronauts to eat on a two-week simulated Mars mission. If the test run goes well, the butchers could supply the food for a real space mission.
Why vegan food? It’s simple. A vegan colony in the cosmos can avoid the destructive force that animal agriculture is to any environment, and our health.
While they wait for the test results, the butchers have been asked to grow carrots and zinnias in Mars regolith simulant (dirt that resembles the dirt on Mars). Pretty cool.
