Gaby Moreno Wants You to Adopt—and Never Buy—Dogs and Cats

Latin Grammy Awards’ ‘Best New Artist’ Is PETA Latino’s Brand-New Spokesperson

When Gaby Moreno first met her adopted Chihuahua mix, Pepper, it was love at first sight—and that’s why the Guatemalan-born Latin Grammy Award winner was eager to take time out from her busy touring schedule with Hugh Laurie and The Copper Bottom Band to costar with Pepper in a brand-new PETA Latino campaign that proclaims, “You Can’t Buy Love, but You Can Adopt It.” The new ad, available here, goes on to explain that adopting—as well as always spaying and neutering—saves homeless animals’ lives.

In an exclusive video interview with PETA Latino, Moreno reveals Pepper’s origins: She was abandoned by an owner who was disappointed when Pepper grew larger than a “teacup” Chihuahua. “So then, we adopted her,” Moreno says. “We love her. She’s brought us so much happiness.” And that’s why Moreno is so proud to take care of Pepper—including making sure that she was “fixed”—and wants to encourage others to adopt their own furry best friend. “There are so many dogs that need a home,” she says. “So, adopt!”

Six to 8 million cats and dogs end up in U.S. animal shelters every year, and roughly half of them have to be euthanized because there simply aren’t enough good homes for them. For every puppy or kitten purchased from a breeder or pet store, a dog or cat in an animal shelter loses his or her chance of finding a home. PETA Latino encourages families to save an animal’s life by adopting—and, of course, to fight homeless-animal overpopulation by always spaying and neutering.

Moreno joins a long list of musicians and other celebrities—including Morrissey, Rubén Albarrán, Joan Jett, Carla Morrison, Dave Navarro, and Rodrigo y Gabriela—who have teamed up with PETA or PETA Latino to promote kindness to animals.
