It’s been a wild ride for Madison Beer, who was discovered on YouTube by Justin Bieber, signed to Island Def Jam, and was just named one of The Huffington Post’s top pop acts to listen for in 2014. But just in time for Valentine’s Day, the 14-year-old “Valentine” singer managed to take a break from her busy schedule to sit down for a video Q&A with peta2, PETA’s youth division, in which she asks kids to be a sweetheart to animals—both by taking care of their dogs and cats at home and by reporting cruelty to animals whenever they see it.

“It’s really important to speak up for animals because they don’t have a voice of their own and they can’t speak up for themselves,” Beer says. “So if you suspect or see anybody that you think is being cruel to an animal, then you should tell an adult that you trust or call the police.”

Beer goes on to remind kids that getting a dog or cat is “really, really fun, but it is a really big responsibility” and that guardians need to make sure that animals have shelter, water, food, exercise, affection, and playtime. As for where to get that dog or cat? “I would always encourage everybody to go and get a dog or a cat … at a shelter because they are really overcrowded right now and a lot of animals are being turned away or even euthanized just because of a lack of so many good homes,” she says. And that’s also why she encourages everyone to spay or neuter their dogs and cats.

Beer joins a growing list of musicians and other celebrities—including “Valentine” collaborator Cody Simpson as well as Lea Michele, Kellan Lutz, and Pink—who have teamed up with peta2 to help animals.

A broadcast-quality version of Beer’s video is available for download here. For more information, please visit peta2.com or click here.
