Casey Affleck Condemns Cruel Dehorning

Oscar-nominated actor Casey Affleck helps PETA expose the gruesome mutilation of cows who have their horns and sensitive horn tissue sliced or burned from their skulls on dairy farms nationwide.

Most people don’t realize that cows used for their milk are born with tissue that will later develop into horns, a fact that is purposefully hidden from consumers. Instead, farmers “dehorn” cows by using caustic chemicals, searing-hot irons, or guillotine-like devices to destroy the horns or developing horn tissue.

“Cows and calves struggle desperately during dehorning,” Casey reveals in his new exposé. “Thrashing, tossing their heads, rearing up, switching their tails, bellowing, and collapsing to the ground—all signs of severe pain and distress. All these procedures are routinely performed without giving the animals any painkillers whatsoever.”

A cow’s natural lifespan is about 25 years, but cows used by the dairy industry are killed after only four or five years. After being forced to produce four and half times the milk they would naturally, cows’ exhausted bodies are turned into soup, companion animal food, or low-grade hamburger meat because they are too “spent” to be used for anything else.

The easiest way for you to help cows abused for their milk is to stop buying it. You can try out delicious, healthy, and cruelty-free nondairy milks, cheeses, ice creams, and more from this list and then join Casey in taking the pledge to go vegan today!
