The Cage-Free Con
Rosemary Escaped – ‘Humane’ Egg Sales Mean Millions of Others Won’t
By Amber Canavan, Associate Director of Vegan Campaigns
Rosemary had a way of winning over everyone she met. At the first sign of company, she ran to the gate – my one-hen welcome committee. She persuaded people that meals taste better when shared, and if blueberries were involved, no fork was safe. Reading or watching TV was always more pleasant with her nestled in my lap, asking to be petted and purring softly. It was hard to imagine how different things were – how different she must have been – before her rescue.

Stepping Inside a ‘Cage-Free’ Nightmare
A “cage-free,” “organic” egg farm in Oregon was shutting down and giving away 4,000 hens. Afraid of where they’d end up, I rushed to mobilize local animal advocates to rescue as many as we could. I had barely entered the barn when the stench of ammonia and feces choked me – even through my personal protective equipment. The hens were frantic and terrified as people who wanted to use their depleted, frail bodies for soup stock chased them and shoved them into plastic tote bins without air holes and black garbage bags. Many of them had bald patches and raw, exposed skin from the crowded, filthy, stressful conditions.

Racing against time, I lifted a terrified hen and whisked her into a waiting carrier – then another and another. Their eyes widened at the sight of open sky, sunlight, green grass, and trees. Over the next few weeks, we rehabilitated hundreds of sick and injured chickens and placed them in adoptive homes – including mine. After that traumatic experience, watching Lilith, Cinnamon, Mint, and Rosemary exploring their new yard, tasting treats from the garden, and sunbathing in a “cuddle puddle” was the balm I needed. I thought I’d seen the egg industry’s worst. But I hadn’t.

Same Cage-Free Lies, Different Company
A whistleblower in Kansas reported that a shed holding 20,000 hens had collapsed, crushing some and leaving others at risk of drowning from burst pipes. They further reported that the facility supplied “pasture-raised,” “Certified Humane” eggs to Vital Farms, which suggested gassing the survivors. As my PETA colleagues secured medical care and emergency placements, I jumped on a plane.
The ends of the hens’ beaks had been cut or seared off, likely without pain relief – a routine mutilation in the egg industry. They were broken and battered, and one hobbled on a deformed foot. Once again, I came face to face with what PETA has exposed for years: A different label didn’t mean a different life. PETA recently became a Vital Farms shareholder to force change from the inside and filmed a new video in which PETA Honorary Director James Cromwell and rescued hens reveal the truth about “cage-free” farms.
My Girls’ Legacy
I had to say goodbye to my girls far too soon, as their bodies were ravaged by reproductive disease. They had escaped the industry, but they couldn’t escape what it did to them. Rosemary stayed with me the longest. She seemed determined to savor every joy she had previously been denied. Now, grief comes flooding back when someone walks by with hens’ eggs. They may not realize that every carton means a life sentence for animals who are clever, affectionate, and eager to live. So I will keep telling their stories.

What You Can Do
If you buy eggs, you pay to inflict pain on hens – it’s that simple, so please never do so. For Rosemary and millions like her, please choose vegan WunderEggs, JUST Egg, Hodo All-Day Egg Scramble, Yo Egg, or Beleaf Vegan Fried Egg. Or scramble tofu, or just abstain – and please share James’s video on your social media pages and with others.
