Monkeys Lose Limbs, Toes at Bankrupt Laboratory Supplier Inotiv, Feds Issue Citation: PETA Statement

Please see the following statement from PETA Chief Science Advisor for Primate Experimentation Dr. Lisa Jones-Engel regarding a just-posted U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) report citing laboratory supplier Inotiv LAMS West, Inc., with two citations, one critical, for Animal Welfare Act violations after numerous monkeys suffered severe injuries requiring amputations. An infant macaque’s arm was amputated after it was crushed by a cage door at the Alice, Texas, facility, while other monkeys suffered injuries leading to leg and toe amputations. The report comes shortly after the June 3 Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing of parent company Inotiv:

Monkeys lost arms, legs, and toes in a string of gruesome, preventable incidents at Inotiv’s Texas facility, prompting new federal citations just two months after the company filed for bankruptcy. The USDA report raises serious questions about Inotiv’s compliance with its federal plea agreement, which requires the company to maintain adequate staffing, veterinary oversight, and animal welfare standards following criminal violations of the Animal Welfare Act and Clean Water Act at its other facilities. The Texas facility breeds, imports, and supplies thousands of monkeys to National Institutes of Health-funded laboratories and major pharmaceutical companies, including Charles River Laboratories, Labcorp, Altasciences, and Northern Biomedical, showing how monkeys suffer at every point of the experimentation industry’s supply chain. Inotiv must stop breeding and importing monkeys and pivot toward state-of-the-art, human-relevant research methods.
