“SeaWorld Kills.” That’s the unmissable message that greeted rush hour commuters in Orlando this morning, when PETA supporters unfurled a massive banner from the I-4 overpass near Conroy Road to mark Boycott SeaWorld Day and call attention to how more than 40 orcas and over 500 other dolphins and whales have died at SeaWorld parks—including Orlando. The company replaces them through its sordid breeding program, in which female dolphins are torn out of the water and forcibly impregnated—and sometimes drugged so they can’t fight backPhotos and videos of the action are available here.

“Hundreds of animals have endured a lifetime of misery and an early death in SeaWorld’s barren concrete tanks, yet the company continues to churn out new generations of captive animals who will only know suffering,” says PETA Founder Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA is calling on SeaWorld to end its dolphin breeding program and release these animals to seaside sanctuaries, and until then, urges everyone to boycott this marine mammal prison.”

In nature, dolphins swim up to 60 miles a day, and orcas may swim as far as 150 miles in a day—but at SeaWorld, they’re denied everything that’s natural and important to them and housed in tanks so cramped and shallow that they can do little more than float listlessly or swim in endless circles while fending off attacks from their stressed tankmates.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow PETA on XFacebook, or Instagram.
