Oakland Fire Department Receives PETA Award for Giving Pigeon Oxygen in Viral Rescue

A Compassionate Fire Department Award is on its way from PETA to the Oakland Fire Department following Engine 29’s viral July 12 rescue of a distressed pigeon. According to reports, the bird approached the firefighters, appearing to seek help after suffering from smoke inhalation caused by a car fire, something animals, like humans, are known to do even if they are ordinarily wary of human interaction. The heroes administered oxygen through a mask, after which the pigeon flew away.

“This brainy bird knew exactly where to turn for help, and Oakland’s firefighters didn’t hesitate to provide lifesaving assistance,” says PETA founder Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA urges everyone to follow the Oakland Fire Department’s kind example and never turn away from an animal in distress.”

The Oakland Fire Department will receive a framed certificate from PETA, along with delicious vegan chocolates, in recognition of their kindness to birds.
