In some of these regions, handlers beat, whip, and force bulls to haul carts illegally overloaded with up to 8,000 pounds of sugarcane in extreme heat.
While one-third of sugar production in a key sugar-producing state has already been mechanized, farmers still force thousands of bulls to work long, grueling hours under the blazing sun without rest or water.
Many suffer painful injuries, including swollen joints, muscle tears, infections, and bloody wounds from handlers striking them with spiked weapons. Many collapse or die from poor health. Eco-friendly tractors not only eliminate this suffering but also provide a more reliable and efficient solution for smaller sugar producers who rely on income from their harvests. A single tractor can transport far more sugarcane than a bull-drawn cart, helping producers move more product while sparing animals from suffering.

All PepsiCo needs to do is commit to purchasing only “bull-free” sugar by requiring suppliers in affected regions to use eco-friendly tractors instead of forced bull labor.
