School lunch shouldn’t force compassionate kids to choose between going hungry and eating animals. The good news? Getting vegan options on your child’s menu may be easier than you think.

Whether you’re hoping to see meat-free chicken, vegan milk, or more animal-friendly meals in the cafeteria, a few simple requests can help create lasting change for every student. From contacting food service directors to joining school wellness committees, here’s how to advocate for kinder, healthier options at your child’s school.

Start With the Right Person

If you want to see vegan options added to the menu, go straight to the source: your school district’s food services department.

Many school menus are planned at the district level, which means the Food Services Director is often the best person to contact. This person oversees menu development, vendor relationships, and food purchasing decisions for multiple schools.

Be polite, be specific, and explain exactly what you’d like to see offered.

Request JUST Meat

One of the easiest additions schools can make is JUST Meat’s vegan chicken from award-winning company Eat Just.

Just Chicken in Regular, Buffalo, and Sesame Ginger

JUST Meat is already available through major food service providers like Aramark and Sodexo, making it simple for many schools to source and serve. Eat Just can even provide product samples for tastings so students and staff can try it before it’s added to the menu.

Unlike chicken flesh, JUST Meat provides a satisfying protein option without killing animals or serving children the cholesterol and saturated fat found in meat. It also helps schools offer more inclusive meals for students seeking animal-friendly, climate-conscious, or kosher-friendly options.

You don’t have to write a request from scratch. We’ve already created a template letter that supporters can send to their school district asking that JUST Meat be added to cafeteria menus.

Ask for Vegan Milk

Families now have more opportunities than ever to advocate for dairy-free milk options at school.

Thanks to recent changes affecting schools participating in the National School Lunch Program, schools may offer nutritionally equivalent vegan milk options as part of reimbursable school meals, making it easier for students to choose a kind alternative to cow’s milk.

In some districts, a qualifying nondairy option may already be available. In others, parents or guardians may need to submit a request.

Students with disability-related dietary needs—including lactose intolerance in some cases—can request a vegan milk option. Schools may also choose to provide vegan milk for students whose families request it for other dietary reasons, including ethical ones.

If your child would benefit from a vegan milk option, contact your district’s Food Services Director and ask what accommodations or request procedures are available.

Start a Veggie Burger Petition

Support your child in starting a petition to bring a vegan burger to the cafeteria. PETA’s Veggie Burger Project includes a printable petition that students can share with classmates and teachers to show school officials there’s demand for a plant-based option. Gathering signatures is a fun, empowering way for kids to speak up for animals and help make kind choices available to everyone.

Join a School Wellness Committee

Many school districts have wellness committees that help shape policies related to nutrition, student health, and food offerings.

Serving on one of these committees can give parents a direct voice in conversations about school meals and create opportunities to advocate for more vegan options and educational programs.

If your district has a wellness committee, consider attending meetings or asking how you can get involved. If your school doesn’t have one, getting involved with the PTA, PTO, or another parent-led group can be a great way to start conversations about expanding vegan options and promoting food- and animal-friendly educational initiatives.

Build Support

School administrators are often more receptive when they hear from multiple families.

Talk with other parents, students, teachers, and community members who may be interested in healthier, more inclusive meal options. A handful of supportive voices can help demonstrate that vegan offerings aren’t a niche request—they’re something students genuinely want.

Every Request Matters

Adding even one vegan option may seem like a small change, but it can make a huge difference.

Ready to get started? Use PETA’s template letters, reach out to your district’s Food Services Director, and encourage your school to serve foods that are good for students and kind to animals. One email could help transform lunch for countless kids.

Let PETA Help You Make Compassionate Change

Supporting your vegan child isn’t just about helping them find something to eat at lunch—it’s about sharing an important lesson: Every animal is someone.

Like us, cows want to play with their friends and care for their families. Chickens are curious, social animals who enjoy exploring, dust bathing, and forming friendships. Fish can recognize one another, learn from experience, and feel pain. Every animal is an individual with a personality, interests, and a desire to live free from harm.

And remember, you don’t have to do it alone. PETA is here to help. Check out these helpful guides:

Every email, conversation, and request can help spare animals and expand kind choices for the next generation. The better future we want for our fellow animals and the planet starts with the lessons we teach our children today.
