Meet the Winners of PETA’s Cut Above Vegan Steak Awards

Steak dinners have traditionally been considered the ultimate Father’s Day meal—but you can leave the cow out of it.  The very best steaks are made from… plants. PETA is recognizing 10 restaurants and eateries that are raising the steaks for compassionate dining. From elegant filet mignon and steak frites to hearty sandwiches piled high with savory animal-free steak, these award-winners will leave you hungry for more.

Meet the 10 Winners of the ‘Cut Above’ Vegan Steak Awards

Vinyl Steakhouse

New York, New York
Award-Winning Dish: Premium Vegan Filet

Who says steakhouses can’t impress vegans? Vinyl Steakhouse’s owners were inspired by vegan team members to create an option that allows everyone to enjoy the dining experience together.

Vinyl Steakhouse

Featuring a filet from award-winners, Juicy Marbles, topped with vegan garlic butter and served with miso carrot-ginger purée and rich vegan au jus, the Premium Vegan Filet delivers all the indulgence of a classic steak dinner—but nobody had to die for it.

Spirit Elephant

Winnetka, Illinois
Award-Winning Dish: Steak Marsala

Just north of Chicago, vegan restaurant Spirit Elephant has built a reputation for its impressive menu, which ranges from comfort-food favorites to elevated entrées.

Steak Marsala

Its Steak Marsala pairs savory vegan steak with a Marsala wine sauce that is the perfect accompaniment, rich and delicious

Vegan Food House

Dallas, Texas
Award-Winning Dish: Steak Frites

Founded by husband-and-wife team Anthony Bookman and Elizabeth Anderson, Vegan Food House has become a favorite destination for Franco-American comfort food lovers in Dallas’ Bishop Arts District.

Steak Frites

For its Steak Frites dish, tender vegan steak au poivre is smothered in savory gravy and vegan feta, then served with crispy fries and a fresh mixed greens salad topped with vegan bacon bits, walnuts, and blueberries.

Oleum

Baltimore, Maryland
Award-Winning Dish: Seared Steak + Fingerling Potatoes

Chef Alisha Adibe founded Oleum on a simple belief: Vegan cuisine deserves the same care, creativity, and elegance as any fine-dining experience. The restaurant’s Seared Steak + Fingerling Potatoes perfectly embody that philosophy. A locally crafted plant-based steak is topped with black garlic compound butter (dairy-free, of course!) and paired with roasted fingerling potatoes finished with truffle salt and sautéed green beans.

The Herbivorous Butcher

Award-Winning Dish: Ribeye Steak
Minneapolis, Minnesota

When The Herbivorous Butcher opened in 2016, it became the first vegan butcher shop in the United States. Nearly a decade later, it continues to impress customers with inventive vegan meats that help people leave the meal feeling good about having left animals off their plates.

Ribeeye Steak

Its award-winning Ribeye Steak features rich marbling made from tapioca flour and vegan fats, creating a juicy, tender texture and savory flavor.

The Butcher’s Son Vegan Deli & Bakery

Award-Winning Dish: Steak Bahn Mi
Berkeley, California

Sibling-owned The Butcher’s Son Vegan Deli & Bakery draws inspiration from the family foods its founders grew up eating. Its Steak Bahn Mi is packed with savory vegan steak on a soft hoagie roll with plant-based sriracha mayo, jalapeños, cucumber, and pickled cabbage. The combination brings heat, crunch, and tangy brightness, while a cashew-based parmesan-style topping adds a savory finish.

DC Vegan

Award-Winning Dish: Chunk Foods Filet Mignon
Washington, District of Columbia

Show Love to All This Father’s Day—Here’s How

Cows and bulls are individuals who defend their children and mourn their lost loved ones. They have complex inner worlds and experience a full range of emotions, just as all animals, including human diners, do.

Mother cow with her baby

The beef industry reduces them to objects and kills them for their flesh. You can help cows and bulls by choosing animal-free “beef” or a juicy vegan steak at every meal.

“Almost all of us grew up eating meat, wearing leather, and going to circuses and zoos. We never considered the impact of these actions on the animals involved. For whatever reason, you are now asking the question: Why should animals have rights?”

— Ingrid Newkirk, PETA Founder and co-author of Animalkind
