Dough-lightful! Saskatoon’s Darkside Donuts Wins Top Ten Best Vegan Doughnut Shop Award

Cue the sprinkles, because just in time for National Doughnut Day (June 5), PETA is recognizing Canadian doughnut shops that dish up the most delectable donuts without using eggs or dairy—and Saskatoon’s own DarksideDonutshas made the top ten list. The shop offers a variety of tasty vegan treats, including the Darkside Dip, covered with decadent dark chocolate glaze and white sprinkles; the Vanilla Sprinkle topped with vanilla glaze and rainbow sprinkles; the Apple Cinnamon Fritter; and two additional seasonal options.
“The stellar sweets from Darkside Donuts deliver out-of-this-world flavor without a crumb of cruelty to chickens or cows,” says PETA Founder Ingrid Newkirk. “All the doughnut shops on PETA’s list are on a roll, serving delicious treats that leave animals in peace—and leave doughnut lovers smiling.”
Chickens form complex social structures, and cows develop friendships over time. Yet in the egg industry, hens are crammed into wire cages or packed into filthy sheds where they can’t even spread their wings, and in the dairy industry, mother cows are forcibly impregnated, and their beloved calves are torn away from them shortly after birth so that humans can take their milk. Just like the animals who are violently killed for meat, hens’ and mother cows’ lives end at the slaughterhouse.
Every person who goes vegan saves the lives of nearly 200 animals each year and reduces their own risk of developing heart disease and cancer. PETA’s free vegan starter kit can help those looking to make the switch.
Darkside Donuts will receive a framed award certificate from PETA, along with bragging rights. Darkside Donuts is located at 625 C 1st Ave. North in Saskatoon, and is open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
