Cue the sprinkles, because just in time for National Doughnut Day (June 5), PETA is recognizing Canadian doughnut shops that dish up the most delectable donuts without using eggs or dairy—and Summerside’s own Get Caked Donuts has made the top ten list. The all-vegan seasonal cafe, open from June through mid-October at Spinnakers’ Landing, offers scrumptious doughnut flavors, including rich Chocolate PB Brownie, Salted Caramel, Oreo, Cinnamon Roll, and fruity Raspberry Coconut, as well as rotating weekly flavors, gluten-free options, and vegan soft-serve ice cream.

“From decadent salted caramel to tart and fruity raspberry coconut, Get Caked Donuts delivers fabulous flavor without a crumb of cruelty to chickens or cows,” says PETA Founder Ingrid Newkirk. “All the doughnut shops on PETA’s list are on a roll, serving delicious sweets that leave animals in peace—and leave doughnut lovers smiling.”

Chickens form complex social structures, and cows develop friendships over time. Yet in the egg industry, hens are crammed into wire cages or packed into filthy sheds where they can’t even spread their wings, and in the dairy industry, mother cows are forcibly impregnated, and their beloved calves are torn away from them shortly after birth so that humans can take their milk. Just like the animals who are violently killed for meat, hens’ and mother cows’ lives end at the slaughterhouse.

Every person who goes vegan saves the lives of nearly 200 animals each year and reduces their own risk of developing heart disease and cancer. PETA’s free vegan starter kit can help those looking to make the switch.

Get Caked Donuts will receive a framed award certificate from PETA, along with bragging rights. Other winners on PETA’s list include Mmm Donuts in Barrie, Ontario; Lucky’s Doughnuts in Vancouver, British Columbia; Léché Desserts in Montreal; Machino Donuts in Toronto; Bramble Cafe in Halifax, Nova Scotia; Hoopla Donuts in Calgary, Alberta; Darkside Donuts in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; Bronuts & Coffee in Winnipeg, Manitoba; and La Beignerie in Montreal.

Get Caked Donuts is located at 150 Heather Moyse Dr., in Summerside, and is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday from June through mid-October.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow PETA on XFacebook, or Instagram.
